We’ve carved up and pulled out asphalt, rearranging it to make earthy beds. We’ve watered and watched and waited. But we’ll leave the job of planting to another gardener: a bird with their own bag of seeds, or a rhizome worming its way to this new opening. You cannot rush the garden or the other gardeners at work here. So while we wait, with itchy fingers, this garden is a reminder to be patient - that changing a landscape takes time. But change it will. This is our garden: sprouting in the crook of our elbow, a rough and rocky embrace. It’s an artistic research project exploring the potential of ruderal plants – often seen as undesirable weeds – in strengthening ecosystems and decontaminating polluted cityscapes. The Ruderal Garden is run by Garden Loops – in collaboration with Färgfabriken and Yannick Woudstra - Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant sciences at Stockholm University. Ruderal plants inhabit environments usually considered inhospitable to human eyes – cracks in sidewalks, industrial sites, waste disposal areas – but are in fact rich and diverse ecosystems. In The Ruderal Garden, we explore the idea of the gardener as a multispecies actor (human, animal or plant) who cares for the Garden. The project takes place at Färgfabriken, where we will build an exhibition garden which embeds our ideas and research on ruderal landscapes in public space. The garden will be built as a pilot project in 2024 and will evolve over the next two years. This garden will be open to the public and aims to engage and educate about ruderal landscapes. The remenants of the industrial area are very prominant here. Only Cementa, the concrete factory, is still active as always. The rest of Lövholmen is pretty much post-industrial wasteland, with private landowners waiting for the green light to build expensive apartment buildings. However, right now, this landscape exists in a state of in-between. With Färgfabrikens konsthall in the midst of this barren area, we proposed to them a project embracing the ones who thrive in the inbetween. On their parking lot we will create a garden for ruderal species - plants especially well equipt for landscapes severely affected by human activity. And so, here is our Garden: a dusty ‘L’ carved into the asphalt. A place for plants to roam and root. Inspired by the theme of the evening ~ pyjama-parties, dreams, radical imagination and commoning as resistance ~ we curated a dinner with lavender popcorn, dream catcher bread, mugwort dipp, nettle pesto, kamomille infused onigiri with mugwort, lions’ mane mushroom, weedy cold apple soup, grilled cauliflower, artichoke, berry-lilac-jelly, ginger drink and cherry blossom schnapps. It breaks open the asphalt and creates unwieldy bumps. This garden will not stay still, it pushes back against the hard edges of the city. Straight lines become lumpy. Water begins to pool around stones and asphalt. Unexpected collaborations form. Roots take hold, or mosses, and build up fluffy blankets of green and yellow.&nbsp; The spindly tree that emerges from the rubble doesn’t look like it will outlast the winter. But in the spring, she blooms. And in the autumn, new branches make her a little bit taller. New roots make new cracks – and new holes in the rubble make space for new pioneers to take root.&nbsp; Ruderal species are pioneers; able to withstand the barren and polluted soil, their presence invites pollinating insects and curious herbivores to populate the area. Some ruderal species are noted to have phytoremediatory effects, absorbing or even breaking down soil pollution, such as the beloved dandelion. All of this paves the way for other species to come in and settle. Even if a patch of ruderal land is bordered by asphalt on all sides, it communicates with all the other patches in its vicinity. It will happily take in any seeds carried by the wind; it will provide refuge to bees, food to hares. And when left to their own devices for long enough, we can imagine these little patches of ruderal land spilling over, to become meadows, and grow into forests.In the exhibition ‘Rubble is a Seed so Red’, new narratives of these, somewhat hostile landscapes, and the resourceful beings inhabiting them, begin to take form. It explores three ruderal ‘characters’: three harbourers of hidden life, three unruly hosts in the ruderal garden. They are food for some, shelter for others: collaborators of a shared, hidden utopia. The work presented in this exhibition is a continuation of Garden Loops artistic research project “The Ruderal Garden”, a multi-species collaborative exploration of ruderal landscapes, a semi-wild, semi-cultivated, experimental garden built at Färgfabriken in 2024. The project explores ruderal plants – often seen as undesirable weeds – in strengthening ecosystems and decontaminating polluted cityscapes, as well as the concept of non-human gardeners. Garden Loops produced a food installation for Sam Druant’s exhibition “Tales of a Spider’s Nest” at Galleri Thomassen, on the 14th of March 2026.&nbsp;The installation is inspired by Druant’s imaginary landscap drawing on alternative feminine mythologies and feminist thought, her work explores desire, monstrous bodies, care for the (female) body, and the intricacies of human existence.Blending textures, colors and flavours, the food creates an immersive and sensous experience of the alien and familiar. The first workshop of Garden Loops consisted of different methods of foraging and preserving food, having a conversation&nbsp; about how local and seasonal food consumption affects our relationship to time, place and community.The workshop started of with roaming around the garden of Gathenhielmska Huset, foraging nettles, goutweed, and apples together with other seasonal fruits and roots, then we fermented/preserved it through various methods. Workshop dinner continuation of foraging &amp; fermenting done at the orangery of Gatenhielmska huset in late August. We prepared a menu to put in relevance those ingredients. In addition, the evening opened up questions around temporality, preservation, urban food culture vs local food networking, how food is charged historically and politically and new rituals and traditions manifesting the future we dream of.
